In the United States, a woman bought Starbucks coffee and accidentally burned her thigh. She sued the court in anger. Finally, the jury ruled that the woman could be compensated for $100,000 (about NT$3 million).

Joanne Mogavero, 43, drove to the drive-through window of her local Starbucks in Florida around July 2014 and bought a large cup of coffee. When she handed it to a passenger next to her, the lid accidentally fell off and the hot coffee spilled on her thigh, causing first-and second-degree burns and permanent scars. (87 degrees Celsius)

Joanna stressed that she was not trying to win sympathy from the jury, but justice. A jury in Duval County, Florida, awarded her $100,000 in damages, including $85,000 for injuries and $15,000 for medical expenses.

But Starbucks issued a statement saying, as we said at the trial, we stand by our employees in this case, believe they are not at fault, and are considering an appeal.
