Because the caffeine in coffee can interfere with the metabolism of drugs and interact with many drugs, it increases the risk of adverse reactions. It is generally recommended that more attention should be paid to taking the following types of drugs.

Quinolone antibiotics. Common, such as levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, etc., should not be taken with theophylline and caffeine at the same time. They can inhibit the activity of drug metabolic enzymes in the liver and cause poisoning due to increased blood concentration. Poisoning deaths have been reported in the United Kingdom.

Oral contraceptive. The vast majority of oral contraceptive can also interfere with caffeine metabolism, so that caffeine stay in the body will be about 4 hours longer than usual, may cause discomfort of the body. And caffeine can reduce or even invalidate the efficacy.

Antipyretic analgesics. Many compound cold medicines contain antipyretic and analgesic ingredients, which reduce the synthesis of prostaglandins, which have a protective effect on gastric mucosa. Caffeine stimulates gastric acid secretion and aggravates the stimulation of gastric mucosa. In severe cases, it can cause stomach burning sensation, stomach bleeding and other risks.

Sleeping pills. Insomniacs must avoid drinking coffee. Some sedative hypnotic pills, such as diazepam and alprazolam, should also be avoided with coffee, because caffeine can cause excitement in the nerve center, aggravate insomnia and antagonize these drugs.

Diuretics. Caffeine can promote the function of the kidney and is beneficial to diuresis. If you take hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide and other antihypertensive diuretics at the same time, the diuretic effect will be increased, and it is easy to cause excessive loss of sodium ions in the body.

Thyroid hormone medication. Patients who take thyroid hormone drugs can reduce their absorption by about half if they drink coffee at the same time. In clinical practice, it often occurs that the efficacy of thyroxine sodium is weakened by coffee drinking in patients.

Anti-osteoporosis drugs. Caffeine can reduce the absorption of calcium and cause osteoporosis. In addition, caffeine can also reduce the absorption rate of the anti-osteoporosis drug alendronate by 60%, resulting in further calcium loss. Therefore, patients with osteoporosis should not take coffee for a long time.

Vitamins. Caffeine can be combined with vitamin B to reduce the absorption of drugs in the body, so try not to drink coffee when taking B vitamins.
