What's the benefit of drinking coffee, besides helping to wake you up and keep you from falling asleep in the middle of work and getting scolded by your boss? A recent Oxford University Press study pointed out that coffee may not only bring benefits to the human body, but drinking enough coffee a day can also reduce the risk of skin cancer melanoma. Hearing this news, coffee addicts must have added another reason not to give up coffee.

People who drink more than four cups of coffee a day are 20 percent less likely to develop malignant skin cancer than those who don't drink coffee.

In this article by JNCI: In a 10-year study conducted by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, investigators collected nearly 450,000 people who took part in the National Institutes of Health-AARP study on dietary habits questionnaires. At the end of the study, 2,904 people were diagnosed with malignant melanoma-a very serious form of skin cancer that occurs in cells that cause pigmentation-and 1,874 people were diagnosed with abnormal skin cells that may cause cancer. When analyzing when factors such as smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and education contributed to cancer, the researchers found another interesting finding: people who drank more than four cups of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to get or possibly cause cancer than non-coffee drinkers.

Coffee has a similar effect to sunscreen?

Why does coffee have these effects on the skin? The study authors believe that coffee's specific ingredients, including caffeine, may ward off cancer: they have found in animal experiments that coffee inhibits cells from becoming carcinogenic after exposure to sunlight, reduces oxidative stress and DNA damage, absorbs harmful light (similar to sunscreen), and detoxifies carcinogens. Despite all these benefits, it's worth reminding everyone that consuming too much caffeine a day, anyway, healthy health comes from good eating habits and regular exercise, but at least one more reason to enjoy a leisurely day in the coffee shop!
