You've probably been to a number of Japanese role-playing themed restaurants; the trend has been catching on fast since 2000. In Akihabara, these restaurants are already dominant, but some of them can be found in Shibuya.

Tokyo's "Foreigner Deacons Eat Tea" is one of the few cafes with a deacon theme. It is the only cafe that employs only white men and serves Italian cuisine, dessert tea and alcoholic beverages.

The Origin of Deacon Cafe

A deacon is a person who is in charge of business or is at the disposal of others, especially in the household of a noble or rich man. Deacon Cafe was opened in 2006 by Graeme Cooke and Yuki Hirohata. At first, they planned to set up Deacon Cafe via email. Yuki was an office worker and Graeme was teaching English. Deacon Cafe is the perfect program for girls who have never forgotten their childhood dream of becoming a princess. Since its opening, Deacon's Cafe has garnered constant public attention; it has also appeared on CNN, been featured in many print media outlets, and received media coverage.

Founding concept

The idea for Deacon Café came from the results of many Japanese women interviewed about their coffee shop preferences. Most people answered that they wanted the staff to be nice, good-looking western men and would treat them well. This must have come from Disney's fantasy of the West. Deacons greet customers with standard "welcome back, princess" greetings. The cafe's setting is classic; there are sofas with rose motifs, lace curtains and angel statues. As soon as a customer enters the door, a handsome deacon escorts the lady to her seat. Then she had to circle the mood of the day on a chart, such as "I need to relax" or "I need to be pampered." There is a bell on the table so that the deacon can be summoned by ringing the bell when he is required to serve.
