Electronic products have already entered every corner of human life. As hard-working workers, seamless handover of mobile phones and computers is the most basic operation. Eyes in high-intensity work, inevitably tired, eventually, that proud vision, gradually lost, eyes become a good friend of mankind.

At present, about 30% of the world's people are nearsighted, and it is expected that by 2050, this number will grow to 50%, of which about 10% will reach high myopia above 500 degrees.

In recent years, myopia research has focused on controlling axial growth and improving iris status. Previous animal studies have shown that oral 7-MX can slow down axial growth, but clinical studies are still lacking. Recently, a study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology showed that caffeine metabolite 7-MX can inhibit the growth of the human eye axis, which in turn plays a role in slowing the progression of myopia.

Denmark has approved 7-MX since 2009 to treat myopia in children, but until now it had not been fully validated from long-term studies, Neuroscience News reported. Researchers reviewed medical records of 711 children (356 girls and 355 boys) treated for myopia between June 2000 and January 2021 at an eye clinic in Denmark.

Of these, 624 children took an average of 470 mg of 7-MX tablets daily (up to 1200 mg), while 87 did not.

The researchers found that compared with placebo, children taking 400 mg a day had a 0.04 mm reduction in axial growth in the first year; children taking 1000 mg a day had a 0.07 mm reduction in axial growth in the first year; and cumulative growth was reduced by 0.18 mm over six years.

During the follow-up period, none of the children taking 7-MX reported any side effects.

Furthermore, because 7-MX is rapidly cleared from the bloodstream, currently available immediate release tablets do not maintain stable concentrations in the bloodstream even when administered three times a day.

The researchers say these findings echo experimental findings. However, they acknowledge that the study is observational and has limitations and cannot account for underlying factors such as genetics, outdoor activity time, race, etc.

If future randomized controlled trials can confirm causality and efficacy, 7-MX could be a valuable drug.

Perhaps one day, with the help of technology, humans will be able to have clairvoyance. But until then, we have to be careful, at least to preserve our sight. Start by drinking coffee as usual and playing less with your cell phone.
