Recently, the Daily Mail reported that an employee of a cafe secretly changed the credit card machine in the shop during work without the knowledge of the owner and the customer, and took the money paid by the customer into his own pocket.

The incident took place at a local coffee shop chain. When paying by card, a guest noticed that the bill for his meal was 42.1 pounds (about 391 yuan), but the actual amount paid by card was 94 pounds (874 yuan).

Accidentally paid more than twice the money, the customer thought it was the wrong operation of the equipment when the customer swiped the card, so they went to the front desk to communicate with him. During this period, the employee tried to return the money through the credit card machine, but after many failed attempts, he had to withdraw the cash from the nearby ATM and return the money to the customer.

Afterwards, the customer reported the situation to the store manager, which unexpectedly aroused the manager's vigilance. After checking the accounts of the store, the manager found that the amount of money actually received by the store did not match the figure on the face of the account. The reason is that the clerk who complained about the customer secretly used his own credit card machine to remit all the money paid by the customer to his personal account.

By the time the incident happened, the employee had stolen about 4000 pounds (about 37219 yuan) from his credit card equipment in a few months, causing serious economic losses to the coffee shop. The manager who discovered the situation hurriedly called the police to deal with it and fired him immediately.

It is understood that the person arrested by the police had a previous record of employee theft, and this act was seen by the prosecutor in charge of the case as an abuse of his position and power by the employee, deceiving consumers with camouflage card-swiping devices and accusing him of fraud. The employee involved also admitted his crime.

He said he had an idea when he saw other senior employees in the store using his own card machine to collect money from customers. So he bought 70 pounds worth of chips and credit card equipment, and when the customer signaled that he wanted to pay his bill by swiping the card, he took out his card machine and remitted the arrears they paid to his bank account without the other party's knowledge.

Surprisingly, although the employee admitted the charges he faced after his arrest, according to a local court ruling, he did not have to go to prison for stealing company money with his own card-swiping device. He was only sentenced to 12 months of community service and 120 hours of unpaid service.

In addition, his lawyer said that the employee had offered to return the ill-gotten gain when he apologized to the coffee shop, but the court eventually ruled that he did not have to repay the coffee shop's loss, but only had to pay a fine of 200 pounds (about 1860 yuan).
