Starbucks Coffee Company and Pu'er Municipal Government join hands with Coffee Industry
On November 12, 2010, Starbucks Coffee Company signed memorandums of understanding with the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the people's Government of Pu'er City respectively, marking a milestone for Pu'er City and Starbucks Coffee Company to join hands. It also marks the beginning of Pu'er coffee industry towards a large-scale, intensive, standardized, export-oriented, brand of modern industrial development road.
Starbucks signs Memorandum of understanding on Cooperation with Pu'er Municipal Government
Prior to the signing ceremony, Kong Chuizhu, vice governor of Yunnan Province, met with Howard Schultz, chairman, president and CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, and some senior executives of the company. Kong Chuizhu said that Yunnan is an excellent coffee-growing area, and coffee is exported to 24 countries. Hope to combine Yunnan's superior resources with Starbucks' advanced technology and marketing network to improve the overall level of Yunnan coffee industry and achieve a win-win situation.
Howard said that the partnership is a milestone on the basis of the initial cooperation between the two sides in 2007, and hopes to take this as an opportunity to cooperate with Yunnan Province in coffee cultivation and other areas, and join hands to promote Yunnan coffee to the world.
Li Linbo, deputy secretary general of the provincial government, Li Xiaoping, deputy secretary of the municipal party committee and mayor, and leaders of the provincial agricultural department, the provincial government foreign affairs office, and the provincial government research office accompanied the meeting.
After the meeting, Kong Chuizhu and Howard led the entourage to attend and witness the signing ceremony.
On November 13, Howard Schultz, chairman, president and CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, and his party went to Pu'er by special plane to inspect Pu'er Coffee experiment and demonstration Farm and Sanglaite Coffee Company, and had a discussion with some coffee farmers in Pu'er.
Discussion between Starbucks and Pu'er Municipal Government
It is reported that the provincial government plans to invest 3 billion yuan to increase coffee bean production from the current 38000 tons to 200000 tons by 2020. At the same time, the scale of coffee cultivation will be increased from the existing 26000 hectares to 10 hectares. As part of the cooperation, Starbucks Coffee will set up its first coffee planting base in the world in our province and its first coffee grower support center in Asia. Starbucks Coffee agronomists and quality experts will work directly with coffee growers in our province to work together to improve the output and quality of coffee beans. Starbucks Coffee experts will also conduct research on new varieties of coffee beans suitable for local cultivation, crop disease resistance and improving flavor.
