Guatemala declares coffee emergency coffee rust continues to spread
According to Xinhua News Agency, Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina declared a state of emergency on the 8th because coffee rust has affected 70% of the country's coffee-growing areas.
Niels Leborowski, president of the Guatemalan National Coffee Industry Association, said coffee rust continues to spread and "has lost 100000 direct jobs and will affect millions of people." Coffee cultivation is a pillar industry in Guatemala, providing 500000 direct jobs and 700000 indirect jobs.
