Researchers at the University of Florida called on products that flooded the market and billed as pick-me-up drinks to contain caffeine. In addition to analyzing 10 best-selling pick-me-up drinks, the researchers also analyzed 19 carbonated drinks and 7 other best-selling drinks. The results show that many pick-me-up drinks contain twice as much caffeine as typical carbonated drinks, but the caffeine content varies from brand to brand, even from the same brand; for example, 12 pounds of original Coca-Cola has 29 milligrams of caffeine, but Diet Coca-Cola contains 30 milligrams of caffeine and Diet Coke lime contains 39.6 milligrams of caffeine. Too much caffeine is associated with many complications, such as sleep interruption, headaches and small babies born to women, as well as increased heartbeat and blood pressure.
