Cuba: coffee mixed with peas to ease supply
In order to deal with the difficulties caused by the United States embargo, the Cuban government has been rationing food and daily necessities to the people through supply cards since the 1960s. At present, Cubans can buy a 115-gram bag of coffee for $0.25 a month, regardless of age. Coffee mixed with peas costs $0.20 per bag.
The Cuban government said in the communique that the price of coffee on the international market has now risen to US $2904 (about 18900 yuan) per ton, an increase of 69 percent over the same period last year, coupled with a decline in domestic production. The Cuban government has to pay US $190 million (about 1.235 billion yuan) to settle domestic coffee consumption.
Cuba used to be an exporter of coffee. Coffee production exceeded 60, 000 tons in 1961 and fell to 5500 tons in 2009, the lowest level in history.
