Since February 2017, there has been an outbreak of diseases and insect pests of coffee bark beetle (Coffee berry borer) in Paxilla. As a result of poor control, the disaster is still spreading, seriously threatening the livelihoods of some 3 million coffee growers in PNG rural areas, which in turn adversely affects the processing, export, logistics and other related retail operations of the coffee industry value chain, threatening the employment of thousands of people in these industries. At present, the main victims are small growers with a planting area of less than 5 hectares, while only a few farmers with 6-20 hectares and plantations over 20 hectares have been affected.

At present, the Coffee Industry Company and the National Agricultural Quarantine and investigation Bureau of Papua New Guinea are trying their best to control the spread of the disaster. The main difficulty is the lack of manpower and funds, and the government has not yet allocated the promised disaster relief funds. At present, the Coffee Industry Company has stopped all other operations and used the remaining funds for disaster relief.
