Recently, Tanzanian Minister of Agriculture Charles Tizeba said that coffee growers and coffee supply and marketing cooperatives in Tanzania will start selling coffee through annual coffee auctions only under the supervision of the Tanzanian Coffee Commission from July. Tizeba explained that auctioning coffee through official channels would help enhance the competitiveness of Tanzanian coffee in the global coffee market and effectively deter individual coffee growers from rampant smuggling of coffee to neighboring countries.
Thizeba said that Tansan's annual auction of coffee this year will be held in Tamosi in July. In the future, annual coffee auctions will be conducted through reasonable planning to ensure that coffee growers and coffee supply and marketing cooperatives receive corresponding benefits at reasonable market prices.
Tizaba said that Tanzania is the fourth largest coffee producer in Africa, after Ethiopia, C ô te d'Ivoire and Uganda. The annual output of coffee in Tanzania ranges from 46000 to 60000 tons, and the annual coffee production in the Kagera region alone is about 12131 tons.
According to Tizeba, coffee is one of Tanzania's main sources of income. Coffee exports account for about 5 percent of Tanzania's total exports. The price of coffee is about 0.5 US dollars per kilogram, and annual exports reach 100 million US dollars. However, coffee production has declined in the past decade, and the government plans to promote the sales and development of Tanzanian coffee through the introduction of disease-resistant coffee varieties and the establishment of a rare coffee variety repository.
According to relevant media reports, due to the fluctuating price of coffee in Tanzania, 1/3 of coffee is illegally sold in Uganda every year. In addition to Uganda, farmers in Tansan Kilimanjaro and Arusha also smuggle coffee into Kenya for illegal sale.
