Uganda's coffee production increases! It is expected to increase China's exports
According to media reports, on September 3, the party secretary of China's Ministry of Agriculture and Village met with the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of Uganda in Beijing. China said that it will continue to implement South-South cooperation projects with Uganda to benefit more people. The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of Uganda also expressed the hope that China will strengthen agricultural research exchanges and personnel training for Uganda and promote cooperation to achieve results.
This news will be beneficial to the development of agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery in Uganda, which is the main economy of Uganda. The agricultural population accounts for about 80% of the country's population, mainly exporting coffee, cotton and tea. Ugandan coffee entered China as early as 2003, and the country's Coffee Development Bureau is also speeding up coffee production, and the China-Africa Forum is expected to increase exports to China.
Recently, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) released the 2023 Coffee Development Board's fiscal year 24 report, which pointed out that Uganda has increased both in terms of coffee export volume and export value. According to the report, by the end of June 2024, the total export volume of Ugandan coffee in fiscal year 2023 reached 6.13 million bags, with an export value of US $1.144 billion. Compared with the 5.8 million bags exported in the previous fiscal year 2022, the export volume increased by 6.33%, and the export value also increased by 35.29%.
The sharp increase in export value is mainly affected by international coffee prices. In January this year, the average export price of Ugandan coffee was US $2.96 / kg. In June, the average export price of coffee rose to US $4.06 / kg, an increase of 79.14% over the same period last year. By July this year, coffee exports reached 821593 bags, an increase of 26.15% over the same period last year.
This is thanks to the EU's earlier non-deforestation regulations (EUDR), which will come into effect on December 30, 2024, and EU traders have increased their imports and increased their purchases in order to prevent a bean panic in the first half of next year.
In addition, coffee production in Vietnam, the world's largest producer of Robusta, fell due to a severe drought, and the European Union began to turn to producing countries such as Brazil or Uganda due to the threat of the Red Sea crisis and rising shipping prices.
The largest export market for Ugandan coffee is the European Union, and Robusta is Uganda's main export variety. As a result, a total of 614486 bags were exported in this fiscal year, with an export value of US $149.95 million. Compared with the same period last year, the export volume increased by 25.5%, and the export value increased by 102.97%.
But at the same time, Arabica exports have decreased. In the current fiscal year, Arabica exported more than 52551 bags, with an export value of US $12.415 million, a decrease of 29.51% compared with the same period last year.
According to the Uganda Coffee Development Board (UCDA), Uganda's coffee performance has been excellent, with a significant increase in exports and a significant increase in the income of Ugandan coffee growers, thanks to earlier funding applications from the government to strengthen Uganda's agricultural output. And the Ugandan government said earlier that it would continue to strengthen the Ugandan coffee industry, hoping to increase production to 20 million bags, while the upcoming China-Africa Forum is expected to increase bilateral trade, and Ugandan coffee exports to China.
