The Starbucks Workers' Union announced that it would hold strikes in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle, where Starbucks is headquartered, on Friday in protest against unfair labor practices and low wages at Starbucks, Reuters, BBC and other media reported.
It is understood that the Starbucks Workers' Union, established at the end of 2022, is part of the International Service Trade Union, which is currently made up of 11000 Starbucks baristas from more than 525 Starbucks stores in the United States. On Tuesday, the union said in a press release that 98% of its members had voted to approve a strike before the last scheduled negotiating meeting this year.
The union said that since February, Starbucks has repeatedly publicly promised that it intends to reach a contract by the end of the year, but the two sides have spent hundreds of hours at the negotiating table this year and proposed dozens of interim agreements. however, many issues remain unresolved, including hundreds of cases of unfair labor practices.
In addition, the union said that to date, Starbucks has not come up with a rigorous economic plan to solve the salary and other benefits of baristas. "Starbucks should finalize a basic framework that includes meaningful investment in baristas and resolving allegations of unfair labor practices," a negotiator from Philadelphia said in a statement.
At the same time, Starbucks refuted the union's claims, saying it was still committed to calling the final framework agreement. In a statement, Starbucks was disappointed that the unions were considering a strike and that the two sides should return to the negotiating table and focus on fruitful negotiations.
Starbucks said that since April, it has arranged and attended more than eight multi-day negotiation meetings and reached 30 meaningful agreements on dozens of issues raised by union representatives that are important to its members, including many economic needs. and the company is committed to improving the employee experience by offering an average hourly salary and benefits of $30 an hour to baristas who work at least 20 hours a week.

The new CEO recently announced that Starbucks will change the parental leave policy for US store employees, offering up to 18 weeks of paid leave to novice parents and up to 12 weeks of paid leave for non-novice parents from March next year. Before that, Starbucks offered store employees six weeks of paid parental leave and up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. So the new policy to be implemented may enable employees to achieve a better work-life balance than the original rules.
However, other news reports pointed out that due to the poor performance of US stores this year, Starbucks not only reduced the full bonus for workers, but also cut the salary increase for coffee shop employees.

In response to the strike, the union pointed out that they decided to implement it because the last negotiations with Starbucks this year reached an impasse and failed to make a breakthrough. They said that unless Starbucks reached a collective bargaining agreement with the unions, the strike was expected to spread every day and to hundreds of stores across the country by Christmas Eve.
