Looking at news reports recently, a netizen in Anhui posted a video on social media, saying that he and his friends were chased away while hiding from the rain under a big umbrella in front of a Starbucks in Hefei.

According to the video publisher, on the morning of December 23, he and his friends were sitting and resting in the outdoor customer area of the Starbucks store in Wuyue Plaza, Feidong, Hefei, Anhui Province, without going to the store to spend during this period. There was light rain in the sky at that time, and the rain gradually became heavier. In order to avoid the rain, the client's friend opened a large umbrella placed in front of Starbucks.

However, shortly after the umbrella was opened, Starbucks employees came out of the store and informed the party concerned that the large green umbrella in the outdoor guest area was used to shade the sun and could not shelter from the rain. So they put away the opened umbrella and moved all the seats in the outdoor area back to the store.

The party concerned said that he could accept the explanation given by the Starbucks clerk that "parasols are not suitable for shelter from rain." Moreover, there is a shelter above the store door. Without parasols, they can still sit in chairs and rely on the shelter above to avoid the rain. However, the shop assistant removed all the chairs without any explanation, which made the party concerned bluntly unable to understand. He also believed that the employee's move was intended to "drive people away" and expressed that he was very uncomfortable with the store's approach.

After the video was released, it attracted the attention of many netizens. Some netizens said that the umbrella fabric of the green sunshade placed in front of the Starbucks store is not waterproof. The fabric that absorbs water after being exposed to the rain will penetrate water and is really not suitable for shelter from the rain.

Another netizen said that if you encounter strong winds and heavy rain, the open sunshade may be blown down and injured passers-by. Therefore, in their view, putting away all umbrellas in outdoor passenger areas on rainy days is a reasonable practice for Starbucks stores to avoid safety risks. Starbucks employees also appeared in the comment area to explain that the practice of putting up parasols on rainy days was in compliance with relevant store management regulations and was not deliberately driving customers away as the video photographer believed.

However, some people disagreed with this statement, saying that the shop assistant was worried that the rain-soaked sunshade would fall under the umbrella to shelter from the rain, and it was understandable to put it away. However, as the person concerned said, the chairs in the outdoor guest area did not have to be deliberately taken back into the store, believing that it was not "humane" for Starbucks employees to remove the chairs when there were people outdoors to shelter from the rain.

In response, the overview reporter contacted the Starbucks store in the video. The staff member who answered the phone said he was not sure about the matter. Later, a person in charge took the phone and said that he had no right to answer reporters 'questions and hung up the phone. The staff at Wuyue Plaza, Feidong, where the store is located, learned of the incident from reporters and said that they would report it to relevant departments and learn about the reason for the incident from the Starbucks store.

More than an hour later, Wuyue Plaza staff replied that the store manager of the Starbucks store explained to the mall that it was because the parasol posed a safety hazard after absorbing water, so the clerk put away the umbrella and reminded customers not to sit under the umbrella to avoid the rain on rainy days. However, the Starbucks store manager did not explain to the mall why the chairs were removed.
