Previous studies have shown that smoking may have a preventive effect on delayed blepharospasm, so de Fazio, a professor at the University of Bari, Italy, and colleagues analyzed cigarette and coffee intake in 166 patients with delayed blepharospasm. The results were compared with 228 patients with facial spasms.

The results showed that there was little relationship between smoking and disease probability, but coffee drinkers were less likely to develop delayed blepharospasm, and the disease was almost inversely proportional to coffee intake.

Researchers are not yet sure which substance in coffee plays a role.
