Last Updated: 2024/09/17, According to Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao, US researchers have found that drinking two strong cups of coffee a day can not only prevent Alzheimer's disease, but may also cure the disease.

Scientists have not been able to determine the cause of Alzheimer's disease (also known as Alzheimer's disease), but it is believed to be directly related to the massive accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain in the form of plaques, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The University of South Florida team genetically modified 55 experimental mice to develop symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. They then divided the mice into two groups, one drinking caffeinated water and the other drinking only plain water. The daily dose of caffeine consumed by experimental mice is equivalent to 500 milligrams of caffeine, or five cups of regular coffee, consumed by humans. The same amount of caffeine can also be taken from 2 cups of espresso, 14 cups of tea or 20 bottles of cola.

Two months later, the caffeine-fed mice had better memory and thinking abilities than those who drank only plain boiled water. In addition, they also have a better memory than healthy mice without Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers also found that caffeine-fed mice had less beta-amyloid in their blood and brain. The report, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, said that after two weeks of caffeine intake, half of the abnormal proteins disappeared.

Aaron Dash, who led the research, said: "the results are significant because caffeine is a safe drug for most people. It can easily enter the brain and seems to directly affect the development of the disease. "

The researchers plan to conduct experiments on humans next.
