IMS Espresso Shower Screens for Commercial Machines

If your commercial espresso machine isn’t pulling shots as cleanly or consistently as it used to, the shower screen might be the overlooked culprit. A poorly designed or worn-out shower screen disrupts water distribution over the coffee puck, leading to uneven extraction, channeling, and flat-tasting shots. Whether you're running a busy café or a high-volume home setup, the right shower screen can make a noticeable difference in shot quality.

The IMS B70 1T series offers two precise options for 58mm portafilters: choose the H26.5 E model for 7–9g single shots or the H24.5 N model for 6–8g portions. Both are engineered in Italy with proprietary technology to optimize water flow and extraction.

What Makes IMS Shower Screens Different?

IMS manufactures its espresso shower screens in Italy using only certified AISI 304 or optional AISI 430 stainless steel. Every batch is traceable, and the production process includes both chemical and physical lab analyses by CSI for quality assurance. These screens aren't just metal discs with holes—they're precision-engineered components built to improve your espresso.

Patented Punching Technology for Optimal Flow

IMS uses a patented punching technique to create conical holes with diameters between 0.25mm and 0.40mm. Unlike standard round holes, these tapered apertures have smooth inner surfaces free from burrs or rough edges. That means coffee oils (crema-forming compounds) and fine particles can exit the puck more easily, reducing clogging and improving flow uniformity during extraction.

Advanced Surface Treatment for Better Performance

IMS treats the surface of its shower screens to reduce roughness at the microscopic level. This involves removing embedded ions and pre-emptively stripping nickel and iron ions to enhance corrosion resistance through natural passivation. The result is a smoother surface that not only contributes to a more even and stable extraction but also makes the screen easier to clean—reducing buildup and maintaining performance over time.

Two Types of Shower Screens to Choose From

IMS offers two distinct designs tailored for different brewing needs:

• 35μm Traditional Woven Mesh: This version maximizes coffee throughput and ensures even water dispersion across the puck. Its fine mesh prevents coffee grounds from passing through while promoting uniform extraction.
• 200μm Laser-Cut Mesh: IMS’s laser-formed design is built for durability and ease of cleaning. The single-piece construction has an almost perfectly smooth surface, eliminating wear-prone areas and resisting clogging. It’s engineered to deliver the best possible flow characteristics with long-term resilience.

Which IMS Shower Screen Fits Your Machine?

IMS makes it easy to find the right replacement for your 58mm commercial machine. Their B70 1T series includes:

• B70 1T H26.5 E: Designed for 7–9g doses, ideal for single-shot pours.
• B70 1T H24.5 N: Built for 6–8g doses, suited for slightly smaller portions.

Both models are compatible with major commercial espresso machine brands including La Marzocco, Nuova Simonelli, Rancilio, Bezzera, Elektra, Astoria, Conti, La Pavoni, and Magister.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IMS shower screen?

An IMS shower screen is a precision-engineered replacement part for 58mm commercial espresso machine portafilters. Made in Italy from certified stainless steel, it features specially designed holes to improve water distribution over the coffee puck for better extraction.

Which IMS shower screen is right for my dose?

If you use 7–9g doses, choose the IMS B70 1T H26.5 E. For 6–8g doses, the IMS B70 1T H24.5 N is the correct fit. Both are designed for 58mm commercial portafilters.

What’s the difference between the 35μm and 200μm shower screens?

The 35μm traditional woven mesh improves coffee flow and prevents grounds from passing through. The 200μm laser-cut mesh is more durable, easier to clean, and offers a smooth surface for consistent performance over time.

Are IMS shower screens compatible with all commercial machines?

IMS B70 1T screens fit most 58mm commercial espresso machines, including models from La Marzocco, Rancilio, Nuova Simonelli, Bezzera, Elektra, Astoria, Conti, La Pavoni, and Magister.

Do IMS shower screens improve espresso flavor?

Yes. Their precisely machined holes and smooth surfaces promote even water flow, reducing channeling and improving extraction consistency—which often results in better-tasting espresso with a more stable crema.
