Is coffee a healthy drink?

A new study in the United States has found that drinking coffee reduces the risk of stroke in women.

The study of 83000 women showed that women who drank five to seven cups of coffee a week were 12 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who drank only one cup of coffee a month.

Professor Martin Grond, a stroke prevention expert in Berlin and professor of the German Stroke Association, believes that since those who drink tea and other caffeinated drinks do not see a reduced risk of stroke, caffeine is not responsible for reducing the risk of stroke. The health benefits of coffee should come from the antioxidants in coffee, which reduce inflammation and improve vascular function.

Taking into account other factors such as smoking and drinking, the researchers found that healthy women who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day had an average 19% lower risk of stroke compared with women who drank only 1 cup of coffee a month; drinking more than 4 cups of coffee a day reduced the risk by 20%.
