How Coffee Before Exercise Reduces Workout Pain

Drinking coffee before working out can cut perceived muscle pain during exercise—whether you're a regular coffee drinker or not.

Ever started a fitness routine only to quit after a few sessions because the workouts hurt too much? You’re not alone. One major reason people drop out of exercise programs is the discomfort—or even pain—they feel during strenuous activity. But what if something as simple as a cup of coffee could help you push through?

Yes, drinking coffee before exercise can significantly reduce how much muscle pain you feel during your workout, and it works whether you regularly drink coffee or not.

The Science Behind Caffeine and Exercise Pain

Researchers at the University of Illinois have spent years investigating the link between caffeine and physical performance. Professor Robert Motl has focused specifically on how caffeine affects pain perception during exercise. His work suggests that caffeine influences the parts of the brain and spinal cord that process pain signals, which may explain why it can make intense workouts feel less painful.

The Experiment: Coffee vs. Placebo

To test this, Motl and his team designed a controlled experiment. They recruited 25 healthy men in their early 20s. These participants were divided into two groups: those who rarely or never drank coffee (low caffeine intake), and those who consumed the equivalent of about 3–4 cups daily (around 400 mg of caffeine per day).

First, each participant underwent a fitness test to measure their maximum oxygen uptake while riding a stationary bike. Then they performed two separate 30-minute high-intensity cycling sessions.

For 24 hours before each session, participants were asked to avoid all caffeine. Then, one hour before each workout, they were given a pill. The non-regular coffee drinkers and the regular drinkers both received either a caffeine pill or a placebo—but matched by body weight. The caffeine group received 5 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. That meant a person weighing 70 kg would get 350 mg of caffeine, roughly equal to 3–4 cups of coffee.

During the cycling tests, researchers tracked participants’ perceived pain levels in their quadriceps muscles, as well as their oxygen consumption, heart rate, and overall cycling efficiency.

The Results: Equal Pain Reduction Across Groups

The findings surprised the researchers. Both the habitual coffee drinkers and the non-coffee drinkers reported the same level of reduced muscle pain during exercise after taking the caffeine pill. The pain relief was consistent across the board.

“The results were unexpected,” said Motl. “It’s known that regular caffeine users develop a tolerance, needing more to feel the same stimulation. But this tolerance doesn’t seem to extend to pain perception. When we scanned the brains of both groups after giving them caffeine, their brain activity was identical. That’s fascinating.”

Motl also noted that while the study didn’t measure performance enhancement directly, the reduction in pain could encourage people to continue exercising despite discomfort—which is often what causes people to quit.

The team plans to explore the biological mechanisms in animal studies, to better understand exactly how caffeine affects pain pathways. Motl, a former competitive cyclist, is also interested in whether caffeine can improve actual athletic performance, but says the current findings already offer practical help for everyday gym-goers.

How Coffee Before Exercise Reduces Workout Pain

“If going to the gym hurts, you might stop. Pain is a key reason people discontinue exercise. If caffeine can reduce that hurt, it might just help you stick with it,” he added.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much caffeine is needed to reduce exercise pain?

The study used 5 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. For a 70 kg (154 lb) person, that’s 350 mg of caffeine, about the amount in 3–4 cups of coffee. This dose was effective in reducing muscle pain during intense cycling.

Does it matter if I already drink a lot of coffee?

No. The study showed that both regular coffee drinkers (about 400 mg caffeine/day) and those who rarely drink coffee experienced the same level of pain reduction from the caffeine supplement. Tolerance to caffeine’s stimulant effects doesn’t seem to affect its pain-reducing properties.

What kind of exercise did the study test?

The tested exercise was high-intensity cycling on a stationary bike for 30 minutes. Participants first had their fitness assessed, then undertook two separate cycling sessions with either caffeine or a placebo.

How was pain measured in the study?

Researchers recorded subjective reports of pain in the quadriceps muscles during the cycling sessions. They also tracked objective data like oxygen consumption, heart rate, and cycling efficiency alongside the pain feedback.

Will caffeine help me work out longer or harder?

The study focused on pain reduction rather than performance. However, since pain is often a reason people stop exercising, reducing that pain may help you continue or complete a workout you’d otherwise quit.
