Worka cooperative
The Worka cooperative is located in the southern part of the Gedeb woreda--Gedeo region (Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia). Its 411 members are part of the larger Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers' Cooperative Alliance (YCFCU). The union has 28 cooperatives in the Gedeo area.
In the areas around the cooperative, small farmers mainly grow varieties such as Kudhume, Welisho and Dego. Among them, Kudhume is the most popular. In addition to the coffee trees planted in the shade, they also grow all kinds of fruit trees. Homemade organic composting is a common practice for small farmers. They do this because it benefits the local ecosystem and keeps their land healthy and balanced.
The cooperative produces washed and naturally processed batches. For washed and processed cherries, freshly picked cherries are ground to pulp on the day of picking. Cherries can be dried for 7 days at most. It depends on altitude and weather conditions. Natural coffee is exposed to the sun for 15 days.
A typical cooperative coffee produces bright acidity, medium-bodied, floral and complex flavors-a trade often found in Yirgacheffe coffee.
