Ndaroini coffee co., Ltd.

In Swahili, Ndaroini is a place where people can spend the night. The name applies to Ndaroini sharecroppers who transport cherries over long distances to nearby Gichathaini washing stations. After a day's work, they returned to the colonial camp-just a stone's throw from today's Ndaroini factory.

By 1981, farmers were frustrated because they had to travel long distances to deliver cherries to a nearby laundry. They suggested building a new washing station closer to home. Farmers and members of Gikatini opposed the construction of new stations and thwarted them in every possible way.

However, through the leadership of their chairmen-the late Geoffrey Mugetha and Muthoni Maathai-and the persistence of the Ndaroini people, the Government allocated a 2.5-acre plot of community land and granted them the right to build new washing stations. The Ndaroini washing station was put into operation in 1984.

The Ndaroini have always had the ability to innovate. In 2018, during several field trips, Menno Simons (the founder of Trabocca) began to investigate why the quality and sales of coffee in Kenya seemed to be disappointing year after year. He met the people of Ndaroini, who clearly expressed their dissatisfaction with the current system. When Menno revealed that Trabocca planned to build a new supply chain, they were eager to change course.

According to the industry standards reported in the National Daily, we pay 55 to 82 Kenyan shillings per kilogram of cherries, while we pay 100 Kenyan shillings per kilogram of cherries and an additional 21 shillings to the factory to improve quality.

The payment was made in February 2019, giving small farmers the opportunity to invest in their land before the harvest season begins again in October. Ruth Njeri Mitham, a member of Ndaroini, explained how the high price per kilogram of cherries and on-time payment affected her life.
