Since 2012, coffee leaf rust has ravaged most of Latin America, affecting El Salvador. From 2012 to 2014, total coffee production in El Salvador fell by 60%. The devastating impact on coffee and coffee growers is incalculable. El Salvador is especially because it is, over the years, one of the darlings of high-end coffee, with a large number of unique varieties of bourbon and Pacamara both summarized in special cups-but, unfortunately, also vulnerable to leaf rust and, therefore, hardly popular in 2012. In contrast, in neighboring Honduras, most farmland has planted disease-resistant interspecific hybrids, and the selection of disease-resistant varieties is more important than their unique cup-shaped traits. During the two years when El Salvador's fragile coffee production plummeted, coffee production in Honduras has increased (although this growth has recently leveled off).
