The tribal legend associated with coffee goes like this: coffee has been part of Starbucks since 1975 (or is thought to be around 1975).

In the mid-1970s, Starbucks began mixing and selling a coffee to Jack Jake O'shaunessey's on lower Queen Anne Street in Seattle. This is the first cup of restaurant "own brand" coffee, called "Jack blended coffee" (Jake's Blend), which is a mixture of 80% Yukon coffee and 20% Italian roasted coffee. There is no other coffee on the menu. Customers began to go into the store and ask for Jack's mixed drink. The baristas scooped out the coffee, weighed it with scales and labeled it "Jack's mixed coffee". Starbucks sold enough coffee that they began to pre-make coffee and label it as 80 go 20. Starbucks added it to the entire bean menu as a mixed drink of "80max 20". For some reason, 80 Compact 20 Blended Coffee could not be registered as a trademark, so they simply renamed it Verona Blended Coffee (Caffe Verona Blend). So the history of the blended coffee dates back to 1975, when Jack Jake O'shaunessey 's coffee (which was long gone) was mixed in the store, then pre-mixed under different names on the entire coffee bean menu board, but sold under two names, and finally registered the trademark under the enduring name of Caffe Verona.
