THALANAR Manor
Founded in 1959, the farm is located in the Anaimale Mountains (which means Elephant Mountain in Tamil) and is located on two mountains facing west and north, respectively. Trees facing north have higher yields, bigger cherries and better quality. During the harvest season, workers can get extra pay if they pick 100 kilograms of cherries a day. Throughout India, pickers pick an average of about 60 kilograms a day. In Thalanar, some pickers can pick 180kg of ripe coffee cherries a day. There are a variety of plants on the farm that provide shade for their coffee trees, including cardamom, pepper, mulberry and orange trees, the main shade trees are Silver Oak (which also helps to reduce leaf rust), eucalyptus, eucalyptus and bananas (when the trees are young). Mature coffee trees are also shaded with pepper, eucalyptus and jackfruit, while young coffee trees use bananas and cardamom. There are a large number of wild animals around the farm; leopards, monkeys, bison and elephants all live in this area. Another project we assist in is the installation of electronic fences to protect farmers, pickers and coffee itself.
