In the past two months, thunderstorms and hail have hit coffee-growing areas in India, causing massive falls of coffee fruit. So far, India's coffee-growing areas have lost more than 30% of Arabica coffee due to January rains. Then heavy rains and hail in February reduced Robusta coffee production.

After two years of flooding, coffee growers had expected a better harvest in 2021. Who knew the weather was bad, with heavy rainfall and hail during the harvest this quarter, affecting thousands of hectares of coffee-growing land, which caused ripe coffee fruit to crack and fall to the ground. These fallen fruits will soon begin to sprout and grow on the soil, and removing these "unexpected" saplings will be a huge project.

The poor harvest of Indian coffee in the past two years has led to a decline in the quality of coffee beans and a drop in prices. Growers can't make money, and the price of hiring harvesters is lower. The Coffee Council of India says at least 50% of collectors will not work on plantations this harvest season. Unless the government provides some incentives to growers and harvesters, Indian coffee production will only decline year after year.

Before thunderstorms and hail struck, the Indian Coffee Council had expected India's Arabica coffee in the new season of 2020 to 21 to reach 102000 tons, an increase of 8.5% over the same period last year, while Robusta coffee production was expected to reach 240000 tons, an increase of 8.7% over the same period last year. Overall, India's coffee production this year was expected to be 342000 tonnes, an increase of 8.7 per cent over the same period last year. The untimely hail of Rain Water, the severe lack of coffee harvesters and the delay in harvesting have undoubtedly caused the loss of at least 30 per cent in 2020 Coffee production areas in India.
