Starbucks will launch a "cup recycling" program in South Korea starting in June, under which customers will receive reusable cups for a "small deposit" that will be refunded when they return them to contactless kiosks.

Starbucks, the world's largest coffee chain brand, announced on March 4 last year that it would temporarily stop using personal cups in stores for fear of the spread of the new coronavirus, the first time Starbucks has stopped consumers from bringing their own cups to stores to buy drinks since it introduced its own cup policy in 1985.

For the health of partners and customers, the policy that consumers can bring reusable cups to Starbucks has been cancelled. All drinks in stores are made from disposable cups. Customers will be temporarily banned from carrying their own reusable cups from March 5,2020. Starbucks officials did not elaborate on how long the measures would last or other details.

In fact, as early as 2018, Starbucks announced that in less than two years, it would ban the use of plastic straws in all its company-operated and licensed stores around the world and encourage consumers to bring their own cups to drink Starbucks. At the same time, Starbucks had previously said that it would provide a more recyclable and compostable hot cup solution by 2022 and reduce its impact on the environment by 2030, such as reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain.
