The whole country of El Salvador grows coffee more or less (um. After all, it's not that big), but there are seven main coffee-growing areas, all of which are thought to be different from each other, mainly in terms of altitude and flavor characteristics. According to PROCAF É, the country's coffee research institute, it is sorted out as follows:
Apaneca-Ilamatepec Mountains:
Located in the western region, ranging from 500m to 2365 m above sea level, it is one of the most famous regions of El Salvador and the location of El Salvador's first appellation of origin. The area includes El Salvador's famous Santa Ana volcano (most recently erupted in 2005) and its nearby coffee, as well as some of the country's larger and better-known farms.
Central Belt/El B á salmo-Quezaltepec Mountains:
The region was originally the birthplace of the Quetzalcoty á n civilization, including the San Salvador volcano and its fertile volcanic soil. The region gets its name from the Salvadoran balsam (an aromatic resin) produced there and benefits from an altitude of 500 to 1900 meters.
Tecapa-Chinchontepec Mountains:
Altitudes vary widely, with average elevations ranging from 500m to 2000 m. The area is home to Mount San Miguel or Mount Chappalastick, with a peak of 2130 m. The region is the third largest producer in the country.
The Kakawatik Mountains:
The area is located to the east of the city of Barrios, between San Miguel and Morazan, with an average elevation of between 500 and 1663 meters. Famous for its clayey soil, farmers here often have to dig large holes and fill them with fertile soil to plant new trees.
The Navatrik Mountains:
Located in the north of Morasan province, bordering Honduras in the north and the Tolola Valley in the south, the area is known as the "land of evergreen forests".
Aotepeque-Metapan:
The coffee growing area here is very high, between 1000 and 2000 meters above sea level. In the northernmost part of the country, it is famous for its very high quality coffee.
Chinjongtepek (San Vicente) Volcano:
Located between La Paz and San Vicente, the Bourbon and Pacas volcanoes are common in the area. Mount San Vicente is 2130 meters above sea level. As one of the newest coffee producing areas in El Salvador, the area is still very suitable for growing coffee and has several famous farms.
