Tea is actually the most frequently consumed drink in the world after water, so you probably have the benefits of black tea on a regular basis. But is black tea good for you? It is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which can protect human cells from harmful free radicals and is definitely one of my favorite anti-aging foods.

In addition, black tea can increase mental vigilance, reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, and may also reduce the likelihood of Parkinson's disease, diabetes and heart disease.

In the East, people usually drink "black" and hot ice cream, while in the West, people usually drink ice cream with lemon iced tea or ice cream with milk and sweeteners such as sugar or honey. Some kinds of breakfasts sound familiar, such as "English breakfast" and "Irish breakfast".

You may also be familiar with Earl Grey Tea, a black tea with bergamot essential oil, or Indian tea that combines a variety of spices with black tea.

Today, it is by far the most popular tea variety, and it is widely eaten every day in the West and South Asian countries such as Sri Lanka and India. So we know that black tea has a lot of fans, but how healthy is black tea?

What is black tea?

Black tea comes from the young leaves and buds of tea trees. Black tea, white tea and green tea all come from the same tea tree. What sets them apart is what they do with the leaves after picking. Black tea has a higher degree of oxidation than oolong tea, green tea and white tea, which makes it taste stronger.

It also has the highest caffeine content of all varieties. The amount of caffeine in black tea is considered moderate, with an average of 42 milligrams per 8 ounces, but it can also be between 14 and 70 milligrams.

There are different grades of black. The whole leaf is of the highest grade, and the amount of tea leaves is very small or even unchanged. These most advanced black teas are called "Orange White Milk Tea". Then, according to the number of adjacent young leaves (two, one or one) picked with the leaf buds, Bai Nao tea is further classified. The highest quality Baimao tea contains only hand-picked leaf buds.

Low-grade black tea consists of broken leaves, fans and dust. The black tea you find in the tea bag is mostly dust and fans, which makes the tea brew faster, but also has a stronger and more pungent taste. Whole-leaf tea tends to be less rough and more floral.

Nutritive composition

All black tea is made from oxidized tea, in other words, those that wither and turn yellow after picking. This oxidation leads to the formation of theaflavins and lycopene, which are responsible for the color and taste of tea and may also be beneficial to health.

A cup of brewed black tea contains about:

2 calories

0.7 carbohydrates

0.5 mg manganese (26% of daily intake)

11.9 micrograms of folic acid (3 DV)

Black tea has an impressive ORAC score of 1128. ORAC stands for oxygen free radical absorption capacity, a method for measuring the content of antioxidants in foods and beverages, developed by the National Institutes of Health. The benefits of black tea must be directly related to its high antioxidant content.
