Suspend mandatory virus detection

Uganda has suspended mandatory novel coronavirus testing for all incoming passengers, a local official said, Xinhua reported on Sept. 3.

Emmanuel Ainebyoona, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said on Twitter that an inter-ministerial committee convened by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja delayed the practice for two weeks.

However, spokesman Ainebyoona did not give a reason for suspending virus testing.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health of Uganda announced on August 20 that from September 3, all incoming passengers would undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing, regardless of their vaccination status. Passengers, including children, were asked to provide a negative report on novel coronavirus's test within 72 hours.

The virus is making a comeback and there is a shortage of vaccines

In June this year, Uganda was hit by a second wave of novel coronavirus, with hospitals running at full capacity, forcing Uganda to enter the blockade again.

Uganda, like most poor countries in Africa, is in sharp contrast to the urgency of getting the first and second stitches, in contrast to the intense efforts of some rich countries to approve strengthening needles.

Dr. Misaki Wayengera, COVID-19 incident Manager in Uganda, joined the World Health Organization (World Health Organization (WHO)) and other African Union countries in calling for the distribution of vaccines to poorer countries before the introduction of enhanced needles.

At present, Uganda has received only about 2 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 300000 doses of Chinese Kexing vaccine.

Export business is affected by the epidemic.

According to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), 700035 bags (60 kg / bag) of coffee were exported in July 2021, valued at US $69.93. These included 660458 bags of robusta coffee beans worth US $628900 and 52939 Arabica coffee beans valued at US $83100.

Compared with the same month last year (July 2020), Robusta exports increased by 41.27% and 56.32% respectively, while Arabica exports decreased by 47.99% and 29.42% respectively.

However, due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the past two years, disrupted the supply chain, the accumulation of goods in various ports, resulting in a shortage of containers.

Freight rates have doubled due to a global container shortage, and logistics industry insiders are urging port managers across East Africa to tighten restrictions on empty containers to recover more containers.

The cost of importing a 20-foot container from China to an East African port has risen from $1500 to $2500, while the cost of a 40-inch container has risen from $2000 to $4000, according to shipping agents and container shipping companies.

Freight forwarder expert Marian Sebnia (Merian Ssebunya) said that there is a shortage of containers, which has a particularly serious impact on Uganda's coffee exports.
