What's the difference between Earl Grey Tea and black tea? When will the rich Earl's seasoned tea be ready?

Earl Grey tea originated in England in the 1820s and later became one of the most popular kinds of tea in the western world. The unique added flavor of bergamot citrus fruits gives Earl Grey tea a unique aroma and flavor, which was originally intended to make the new Indian black tea have the citrus quality naturally found in Chinese high-quality black tea.

With the popularity of classic recipes, there are many different versions of Earl Grey tea, but all Earl Grey teas are based on the addition of bergamot flavor. Traditionally, this flavor has been added to standard black tea from India, with a bold taste and typical astringency. Today, however, many brands have expanded on the theme, using green or slightly oxidized oolong tea, or adding other seasonings, such as lavender or orange peel.

What is bergamot?

The main ingredient of Earl Grey tea is thought to be a mixture of sweet lime and bitter orange. Its most famous producing area is a region called Calabria in southern Italy. It is said that 90% of the world's bergamot is grown in this small region, and this unusual citrus is very rare. Essential oil is extracted from bergamot peel. Although modern technology makes the extraction process less laborious, only 3 ounces of precious essential oils still require about 100 bergamot fruits.

Judging from the annual sales of Earl Grey tea, it is clear that not all Gray Earl Grey Tea recipes use this high-quality essential oil, whether in specialty tea stores or on grocery store shelves. Mid-range tea may use essential oils mixed with other citrus essential oils, while mass-market tea bags are almost certainly flavored with chemical-derived imitations.
