Darjeeling, Xizang Dorje Ridge, city, northernmost West Bengal, northeastern India. It is located about 305miles (490km) north of Calcutta and about 7000 feet (2100 m) above sea level. Darjeeling, located on a narrow ridge of the Sikkim Himalayas, suddenly descends to the riverbed of the Great Longit River. On clear days, the city has a magnificent view of the dry city of Jung (28169 feet [8586 meters]), and Mount Qomolangma can be seen from a nearby observation platform. The name of the city means "the land of lightning". Dajiling is a famous mountain resort, and the city's economy depends mainly on tourism; the peak periods for tourists are from April to June and from September to November. The city has major road, rail and air links with Calcutta. In 1835, the Duke of Sikkim ceded Darjeeling to the British and later developed into a sanatorium for the British army. It became a municipality in 1850. The Chaurastha ("four roads") district is a shopping mall around the intersection of roads; it is the city's main shopping center and the most attractive pedestrian street.

Mount Birch has a natural park and Himalayan mountaineering college. The Lloyd Botanical Garden (Lloyd Botanic Gardens) was founded in 1865 and is famous for its Himalayan plant species. In addition to these attractions, Darjeeling also has a zoo, a natural history museum and a racecourse. It is famous for its boarding schools, with several colleges attached to the University of North Bengal (founded in 1962) both inside and outside the city. Darjeeling has abundant rainfall and diverse climate, ranging from tropical to subalpine elevations. The local coniferous and oak forests produce valuable wood. The local rural economy is mainly based on black tea production, because the climatic conditions in the region are particularly suitable for tea cultivation.
