According to media reports, Tropical Storm Sara recently formed in the Caribbean, becoming the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, the storm has made landfall in northern Honduras, the president of Honduras declared a 30-day state of emergency.

According to the Honduran National Secretariat for risk Management and Emergency response, Tropical Storm Sarah has affected nearly 33000 people to varying degrees across the country. 6604 of these families have been seriously affected and some areas have been lost with the outside world.

It is reported that Tropical Storm Sarah is moving westward at a speed of 15-20 kilometers per hour in Cologne, Honduras, bringing torrential rains, floods, landslides and landslides to Honduras. The rainfall in most areas reaches 300-500 mm, and the rainfall in the worst affected areas will reach more than 700 mm. Many roads have been submerged, making it difficult for people to travel.

At present, the most serious is the La Esperanza Mountains in the north-central part of the country and its surrounding mountains, where rivers are flooded and disasters such as floods and landslides occur. The country's armed forces have deployed human and logistical resources to help the victims.

It is understood that Honduras is located in the coastal area of northern Central America, and its special geographical environment leads to many strong winds and torrential rains in the region. In June this year, Honduras had already experienced a torrential rain when, according to the National Secretariat for risk and Emergency Management, heavy rains caused road damage and river flooding, during which one person died as a result of the rainstorm. More than 6000 people were affected by the disaster weather, more than 900 people were forced to evacuate, and seven provinces across the country issued yellow alerts.

But this is a tropical storm, the scope of the impact is even more serious. And the current storm Sarah is moving to the northwest, so Honduras's neighbors Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Mexico will all be affected.

In addition, the storm is mainly in the northwest of Honduras, which is where the main ports of Honduras are located, including the largest and most important port of Puerto Cortes, so import and export business in Honduras will be suspended for a few days, which is not conducive to the industrial development of Honduras.

Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America and the sixth largest coffee producer in the world and a major exporter of Arabica coffee. However, coffee production in Honduras has not been satisfactory so far this year. According to figures released by the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE), Honduras exported 321303 bags of coffee (60 kg each) in August 2024, a decrease of 19.44% compared with the same period last year. At the same time, Honduras has exported a total of 4.35 million bags of coffee since 2023, a decrease of 11.07 percent compared with last year.

However, according to IHCAFE's forecast, coffee production is expected to increase in 2024max in 25, and coffee exports are expected to rise 14.5 per cent to 5.37 million bags from a year earlier. But heavy rains in recent days may have an impact. November is the harvest season in Honduras, but the arrival of torrential rains will delay the coffee harvest, and torrential rains may knock down ripe fruit, leading to final production.

And because the road is destroyed and the port export is blocked, it will affect the export of coffee and other products and affect the supply of coffee. As a result, in recent days, as several coffee producing areas in Brazil, Colombia and Central America have been affected by bad weather, both production and exports have decreased, exacerbating the surge in Arabica coffee futures prices to record highs.
