Drinking 5 cups of tea or coffee a day reduces brain tumor risk by 40 percent
Drinking at least five cups of coffee or tea a day can help prevent brain tumors, according to a new study from Imperial College London, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.
The findings appear in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. During the trial, researchers studied more than 300 men and women diagnosed with gliomas, a tumor that usually starts in the brain.
When they compared coffee drinking habits of brain tumor patients with healthy people, they found that those who drank at least five cups of tea or coffee a day had a 40 percent lower risk of cancer. Caffeine has a greater protective effect on men, though scientists don't know why.
One theory is that caffeine reduces blood flow to the brain, preventing tumors from growing because of lack of oxygen and nutrients. Decaffeinated tea or coffee does not have this effect.
