How many cups of coffee do you drink every day to prevent serious illness?
A 19-year follow-up study by the research team of the National Cancer Research Center of Japan found that drinking more coffee and green tea can help reduce the risk of death from a variety of serious diseases.
According to the number of times the subjects drank coffee, the team divided them into five groups: "hardly drink coffee" to "drink more than five cups of coffee a day". The participants who drank three or four cups of coffee a day had the largest reduction in risk of death, with a reduction of 24 percent. The survey also shows that drinking more coffee can reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and respiratory diseases.
Based on participants who drank less than one cup of green tea a day, the team found that men and women who drank more than five cups of green tea a day reduced their risk of death by 13 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. The study also found that the risk of death decreased further with the increase in green tea intake. Men who drank green tea for a long time were less likely to suffer from cerebrovascular and respiratory diseases.
Researchers at the center believe that the reason why the intake of green tea can reduce the risk of death from heart disease may be related to the role of catechins in green tea. In addition, catechins are thought to improve blood pressure and reduce body fat and blood lipids.
