Drinking coffee during treatment for patients with advanced hepatitis C can help improve the effectiveness of treatment, according to a new study in the United States.

A team from the National Cancer Institute reported in the new issue of the American academic journal Gastroenterology that in small clinical trials, patients with hepatitis C who were treated with pegylated interferon and the antiviral drug ribavirin, who drank three or more cups of coffee a day, were twice as effective as those who did not drink coffee.

The researchers point out that previous studies have shown that coffee drinking is associated with lower levels of liver enzymes, slower progression of chronic liver disease and a decrease in the rate of hepatocellular canceration. this effect is not affected by other factors such as race, hepatitis C virus content, liver cirrhosis and transaminase levels. But the researchers point out that the reason for this effect of drinking coffee is not clear.
