Five cups of coffee or tea a day can reduce the risk of cancer
Drinking at least five cups of coffee or tea a day can help prevent brain tumors, according to a new study by Imperial College London.
The findings are published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. In the course of the experiment, the researchers studied more than 300 men and women who were diagnosed with gliomas, a type of tumor that usually starts in the brain.
When they compared the coffee-drinking habits of patients without brain tumors, they found that those who drank at least five cups of tea or coffee a day were 40% less likely to develop cancer. Caffeine has a greater "protective" effect on men, but scientists don't know why.
One theory is that caffeine reduces blood flow to the brain, preventing tumors from growing due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. Decaffeinated tea or coffee does not have the above effect.
