Drinking coffee can help prevent uncontrollable throbbing of eyelids, according to a new Italian study.

Previous studies have shown that smoking may have a preventive effect on delayed blepharospasm, so de Fazio, a professor at the University of Bari, Italy, and colleagues analyzed cigarette and coffee intake in 166 patients with delayed blepharospasm. The results were compared with 228 patients with facial spasms. The results showed that there was little relationship between smoking and disease probability, but coffee drinkers were less likely to develop delayed blepharospasm, and the risk was inversely proportional to coffee intake.

Although researchers are not sure which substance in coffee plays a role, they speculate that it is most likely caffeine. Because caffeine acts on the receiver in the brain's basal ganglia, which plays an important role in controlling movement. They plan to further study whether coffee can reduce the risk of other dystonia diseases and prevent dystonia from moving from one part of the body to another.
