According to the survey, South Korean adults drink an average of 377 cups of coffee a year, and the company drinks the most coffee.

On May 24th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Animal products of South Korea and the Korea Agricultural and Water products Circulation Commune (aT) released the Coffee Market report containing the above contents. The average amount of coffee consumed by South Korean adults over the age of 20 increased from 288 cups in 2012 to 377 cups last year, an annual increase of 7 percent, and more than one cup of coffee per person per day for the first time last year, according to the report. Each cup of coffee is based on 10 grams, which is obtained by dividing one year's coffee consumption by the number of adults.

According to the survey, the place where Koreans drink the most coffee is the company. The results of a consumer characteristics survey of 606 adults with coffee consumption experience showed that respondents (multiple choices) said they drank coffee most often in the company, accounting for 34.1% of all respondents, followed by homes (26%) and coffee shops (23.7%). Most people drink coffee "after lunch", accounting for 27.6%, followed by "after work or in the morning" (20.4%).

According to the report, the size of the South Korean coffee market grew from 4.9022 trillion won in 2014 to 6.4041 trillion won in 2016, an increase of 30.6% in two years. In particular, the market size of coffee stores grew from 2.6 trillion won in 2014 to 4 trillion won last year, an increase of 53.8%. The market for finished coffee excluding coffee stores grew by just 4.4 per cent from Won2.3022 trillion in 2014 to Won2.4041 trillion last year. Compared with its growth trend, it is expected that the expansion of coffee stores has led to the development of the coffee market.

South Korea's coffee trade balance has been in the red after four years. Although South Korea is not a country that grows coffee directly, it uses imported coffee for processing and re-export, resulting in a trade surplus almost every year. The main exporting countries are Russia, China, Greece and so on. Last year, exports totaled US $180.21 million, a decrease of 7.1%, with a deficit of US $24.21 million. According to an analysis by South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, "the recent decline in exports of coffee products is due to the economic malaise in the main export markets, such as Russia and South Africa, as well as the decline in exports to China caused by political and economic reasons."
