In the west-central part of Xiamen Island, there is a very wide surface of water, called Qianyang Lake. In 1970, as a result of the policy of reclaiming land from the sea at that time, Xiamen built a 1700-meter-long "seawall" (that is, the "west dike") on the west side of the port, and the former wide harbour was finally reclaimed as the city's inner lake.
