Yunnan's relatively gentle mountain area accounts for only 10% of the total area, a large area of land is uneven, vertical and horizontal ups and downs, and there is a gentle plateau surface in a certain area. In the longitudinal valley of western Yunnan, Gaoligong Mountain is the top of the mountain on the watershed between the Irrawaddy River and the Nujiang River, often covered with permanent snow, forming strange and majestic mountain glacier landforms. The Jinsha River "Hutiajian" canyon, with a relative height difference of more than 3000 meters from the mountains on both sides, is one of the world's famous canyons. The distance from Xidang Tiesuo of Lancang River to the summit of Kagbo Peak in Meili Snow Mountain is about 12 kilometers, and the height difference is 4760 meters. In a narrow range of more than 10 kilometers, it presents a strange landscape of subtropical dry-hot valleys and alpine ice and snow worlds. The natural scenery is equivalent to the latitude from Guangdong to Heilongjiang.

The province is divided into three echelons. Deqin and Shangri-La counties in northwest Yunnan are the first, the plateau in central Yunnan is the second, and the south, southeast and southwest are the third, with an average decline of 6 meters per kilometer.
