What can I drink from a hangover? The answer is coffee. Studies have found that coffee is not only refreshing, but may also help protect the liver and reduce the damage caused by alcohol to the liver.
Coffee is known to help refresh the mind, but foreign studies have found that drinking coffee after drinking alcohol can also counteract the effect of alcohol on the liver and have a protective effect on the liver.
Finnish scientists have found that drinking more than five cups of coffee a day can reduce the GGT of liver function indicators by half, especially in men.
They followed nearly 19,000 subjects for more than 10 years, surveyed their health, medical records, alcohol consumption and coffee drinking habits, and then measured their liver function indicator, glutamine transaminase (GGT).
The GGT index is easily affected by alcohol, and in general, the activity of this enzyme increases in people who drink regularly, and are therefore often used as an early indicator of liver function damage in alcoholics. In addition to alcohol, drug-induced liver dysfunction can also increase GGT. In addition, the value of GGT is also used as a pointer for the diagnosis of liver cancer.
In the study, published in the journal Alcoholism and Alcoholism (Alcohol And Alcoholism), Finnish researchers found that people who consumed more than 280g of alcohol a week, equivalent to 18 cans of beer (in 330ml) or 3.7bottles of red wine, had three times higher GGT than non-drinkers.
However, among the alcoholic subjects, those who drank more than five cups of coffee a day had a 50 per cent lower GGT. As a result, the study concluded that people who like what is in the cup may help lower their GGT if they drink more coffee. Some previous studies have also found that some ingredients in coffee help protect the liver from damage.
The British liver Trust (British Liver Trust) welcomed the study. Andrew Langford, chairman of the foundation, said that many people in the UK would have a cup of coffee after a drink. "this finding proves that this practice has health benefits," said Andrew Langford.
"of course, you still need to avoid drinking too much, but the discovery of five cups a day attracts attention," he said.
