The Kaew region, which surrounds the beautiful Lake Tawar, has an average annual rainfall of 2200mm and an excellent average altitude. The coffee growing area is located at about 1100 - 1400 meters and volcanic soil conducive to coffee cultivation. Coffee cultivation in this area is usually carried out by independent small farmers, and coffee quality is improved by planting coffee under shade trees.
Unlike Mantenin produced in Linton, southwest of Doba Lake, another Indonesian specialty coffee region, Kaew coffee has a more reserved character, usually with a very thick taste and rich chocolate dried fruit flavor.
