This is an organic certified Excelso EP coffee from ASCI SP Cooperative located in Gaitania, Tolima, Colombia.
ASCI SP stands for Caficultores Organosde San Pedro Associación Indigenade Caficultores Organosde San Pedro. ASCI SP was founded in 2014 and currently has 80 members and 207 hectares of collective farmland. ASCI SP exists to benefit the indigenous Nasa We sx group located in San Pedro vereda, south of Gaitania, Tolima province. Nasa people have great respect for the land they inhabit and grow everything organically, keeping it as pristine as possible. The association helps coffee growers improve agricultural practices and maintains organic and fair trade certification that members cannot obtain on their own. In addition to physical quality and certification, the association's local quality analysis feature helps members earn a premium on cup quality that most growers can't. The altitude of this lot is between 1600 and 2000, and the harvested varieties include Caturra, Typica, and a small number of Castillo and Tabi. Coffee is dried and fermented on closed mesh beds (marquesina) and on open-air elevated terraces (elba) before drying.
Gaitania is known as the birthplace of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which has been present in the region for the past 60 years. Although Colombia recently signed a peace agreement with the FARC, NASA has been around for more than 20 years, and opposition groups have been able to reach an understanding since insurgent groups faced indigenous resistance when they tried to seize the reserve in the 1990s. Thanks in part to good leadership, vision and the collective spirit of NASA's "Our People," Asci SP has become a model in just a few short years.
