On the afternoon of the weekend, the sunshine was warm in Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, the main coffee producing area in China. Liao Xiugui, a 77-year-old "Ka Nong" in the Xiaoguzi coffee farm in Nandaohe village on the outskirts of the city, is making coffee to cheer her up. Outside the window, 300 mu of coffee forest, lush.
This is one of the best coffee forests in the area. But it's hard to imagine that 21 years ago, it was just a wasteland.
"the climate in this valley is very suitable for growing coffee. But soil erosion is so serious that locals only occasionally come to herd cattle. " Liao Xiugui told reporters that for more than 20 years, he and his wife Zhang Fuli and farmers have been planting trees, fertilizing, diverting water, and planting on a trial basis, and have finally been recognized by the coffee giant Nestl é.
"for more than 20 years, our coffee garden has grown from scratch. The coffee industry in Yunnan has also grown from small to large. " Liao Xiugui said that after graduating from university in 1964, he came to Yunnan from Hainan to develop tropical crop cultivation. As one of the earliest coffee people in Yunnan, he has witnessed the development of the coffee growing industry in Yunnan and even in China, and has always had a simple dream in his heart-to expand the coffee industry and drive more farmers to become rich.
It is thanks to their efforts that today, the coffee planting area of Pu'er City has exceeded 789000 mu, with an annual output of 58600 tons of coffee beans, and the scale of farmers has reached more than 75000 households with more than 300,000 people. Coffee industry has become a backbone characteristic industry for local people to get rich, enterprises to increase efficiency and export to earn foreign exchange.
Compared with the old "Ka Nong" 's obsession with planting, the rising star Li Hongfang is more ambitious. "to bring Yunnan small coffee into the international market" is their "coffee dream".
At the beginning of this century, after working for a period of time in Nestl é Xishuangbanna branch, Li Hongfang, who is proficient in foreign languages, began to introduce Yunnan small grain coffee to the international market.
"if the monopoly of international buyers is not broken, domestic coffee will always be in a passive position." Li Hongfang recalls that in 2001, when he could only dial up the Internet, he pulled a network cable to promote Yunnan coffee to overseas companies in the form of e-mail. That year, he successfully sold two containers of raw coffee beans.
Today, the export territory of Yunnan coffee has been expanded to more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea and so on. Li Hongfang's son Li Guanting and Liao Xiugui's daughter Liao Haiying and other new generation of "farmers" have turned their attention back to China.
"Yunnan coffee is exported to many countries, but it lacks bargaining power for a long time, increasing production without increasing income." Li Guanting said that at present, they are beginning to reflect on the original single-export development model and explore changes. The rise of the domestic coffee consumption market is bringing opportunities for the fine cultivation and processing of local coffee.
On the basis of his father's original trade, Li Guanting established his own coffee brand and training school, and began to set up coffee big data. Liao Haiying is trying to create boutique coffee through a variety of processing methods.
"it is a common complex of Chinese coffee people to have a cup of coffee of their own," says Li Guanting.
Liao Haiying believes that by cultivating their own products and markets, Chinese farmers will eventually have more say in the international market.
