Decaf is not decaffeinated coffee. This is the findings of a new study from the University of Florida. It means that even a cup of decaf can be too exciting to sleep.
The study points out that if a person drinks five to ten cups of decaf coffee a day, the amount of caffeine consumed is equivalent to one or two cups of caffeinated coffee. The researchers bought ten 16-ounce cups of drip coffee (drip-brewed coffee) from nine national chain stores and local coffee shops to test their caffeine content. With the exception of Folgers Coffee Crystals's instant decaf coffee, which does not contain any caffeine, other brands of coffee contain between 8.6mg and 13.9mg. Caffeine is usually 170 milligrams in 16 ounces of dripping coffee.
The researchers also tested 12 types of Starbucks decaf espresso (espresso) and freshly ground coffee. The caffeine content ranges from 3 to 15.8 mg per cup of espresso and 12 to 13.4 mg per 16-ounce cup of freshly ground coffee.
The study also points out that even moderate levels of caffeine such as 10 mg of caffeine can have an effect on the behavior of some sensitive people, leading to faster heartbeats, higher blood pressure and anxiety in some people. For example, some popular espresso lattes (Latte) contain as much caffeine as a bottle of Coca-Cola, about 31 milligrams.
The study reminds some patients who are not fit to drink coffee, such as high blood pressure, kidney disease or anxiety disorders, to give up on coffee.
The University of Florida study was published in the October issue of Analytical Toxicology (Analytical Toxicology).
