Burka Silinga is a water-washing plant in Ethiopia's Gashfi region that receives coffee cherries from around 500 small farmers. The smallholder farms in this area are only about 2 hectares in size, so in addition to coffee, corn can also be grown to support a family. The treatment plant uses a traditional washing process, which requires 48 hours of fermentation time. Coffee beans with paper skins are spread out on 100 coffee beds to dry on a large scale. A nearby lagoon is also covered with sewage treatment equipment to filter and purify used water.
