The Rubagabaga Coffee washing Station was built in the early 1990s to collect cherries from miniature plantations in the mountains around the station. No more than 350 coffee plants are managed per plantation and grow in natural shade. Rubagabaga, a coffee washing station owned by Greenco, won the first place for a cup of coffee in Kayanza with a score of 91.43. Munkaze Coffee, a coffee washing station owned by Buja Coffee, ranked second with a score of 91.14. In the cup test, this kind of coffee often has bright acidity, orange sweetness and orange blossom aroma. The coffee comes from the Kayanza region, located in the north of the country, near the border with Rwanda. Kayanza is mainly known for its water source of the Nile. A unique type of water used to treat coffee fruits from all nearby wet mills.
Burundi is a land with a long coffee tradition. Its high altitude, thousands of hills, volcanic soil and abundant rainfall provide ideal conditions for the production of special and exotic coffee. In Burundi, there are no large plantations. Coffee is actually grown on small family farms, traditionally bringing cherries to the nearest coffee washing station.
Burundi divides its coffee system into so-called Sogestals (Societ é sdeGestion desStations de Lavage-translation: the management company of the washing station). They are the organization behind most washing stations in Burundi. Sogestals supports farmers and washing stations through financing, transportation, international commercialization of fertilizers and coffee.
The international jury of the Burundian Award of Excellence (COE) has awarded seven presidential awards to achieve a COE record of 90 points or more. The presidential awards that have scored the most in COE history will be sold in two auctions on Sept. 25. 331 coffee samples were submitted from washing stations throughout Burundi, which were reviewed in Bujumbura on 2 August, shrinking from five different provinces to 29 coffee.
The jury represented markets from the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Norway, Russia, Australia and Burundi.

Burundian coffee is prone to potato taste defects or PTD, which is often found in some East and Central African Great Lakes coffee. The exact cause of the defect is not clear.
The COE competition eliminates any coffee that shows potato defects in the cup at any stage of the competition.
Emma Chevalier from Revelator Coffee of the United States said that although the coffee in Burundi is amazing, the possibility of potato defects still exists.
