Since 1953, the local coffee has been planted on a large scale. By the end of 1960s, the planting area of Dehong coffee has reached 15000 mu, with an output of more than 4000 tons. After that, under the influence of many factors, the production of Dehong small-grain coffee went to a low ebb, and most of the coffee fields were changed to other crops. Coffee cultivation in Dehong Prefecture is mainly small-grain coffee (Arabica), with excellent varieties, high quality and delicious taste, and has created a national record for per unit yield of 363.5 kg coffee beans (the average yield of coffee beans per mu in China is about 80-100kg). Since 1998, the Yunnan provincial party committee and provincial government have listed Dehong as one of the major coffee producing areas in the province to give key support. By the end of 2010, the planting area of Dehong coffee has reached 139000 mu, with an annual output of more than 11000 tons of dried coffee beans, accounting for about 1/3 of the province's total.
