The present situation of the Development of Coffee in Costa Rica

As a pearl on the narrow continental belt of Central and South America, Costa Rica has a land area of only 51000 square kilometers, a total population of about 4.86 million, and a population density of 5 people per square kilometer, ranking 107th in the world.

Costa Rica receives about 2 million tourists a year, about 1/2 of its population.

The per capita GDP here is about US $12000, of which tertiary industries such as tourism and foreign-related finance contribute more than 60 per cent of GDP.

This year, China Eastern Airlines Zero Coffee also had the honor to come to this beautiful coffee country with its friends.

It is worth mentioning that the happiness index of the people of Costa Rica is among the highest in the world. The country has a small territory, a low population density and a low military strength, but attaches great importance to environmental protection.

Why are there so many white people in Costa Rica?

First, Costa Rica is located in the narrow continental belt of Central America, facing the sea on both sides, with a small land area and many volcanoes, and because of its lack of precious metals, it is not attractive to the early Spanish colonists. And because most of the area belongs to the tropical rain forest climate, rich in poisonous snakes and mosquitoes, it is not suitable for agricultural development. So after the original colonists landed here, they quickly went south to attack the Inca Empire and did not take root here.

Second, although the colonists took nothing from this fertile land, they left behind the virus, resulting in a sharp decline in the indigenous population from 400000 to less than 10, 000. The direct consequence of the decline of aborigines was that the Spanish colonists who settled here in the early years could not recruit enough slaves and had to do many things on their own, and most of the Spaniards were self-reliant small farmers.

Later, these small farmers became farmers, and these people eventually formed the cornerstone of the country. The Blue Volcano Manor, which we later visited, is the manor of German descent, and the whole manor is as beautiful as a national park.

Third, because the population is too small, Costa Rican aborigines have basically not been abused, because there is no need for violent repression. There are a lot of local aborigines who intermarry with whites. Today, 95% of the country's population is white and half-Indian, they all claim to be white, and Costa Rica is recognized as the whitest country in Latin America.

Environmental protection comes first.

In the 1950s, a Swede and his Danish wife emigrated to Costa Rica and bought a piece of land to build an orchid plantation. With the growth of population, many Costa Ricans encroach on primeval forests and open up wasteland. The Swedes applied for a large sum of money from several international foundations to bribe the Costa Rican government to buy a large piece of land to set up the country's first nature reserve. In order to drive the farmers away, the Costa Rican government took many illegal measures to arouse public dissatisfaction, and the Swede was also assassinated by local farmers. However, this top-down environmental policy has persisted, and Costa Ricans have finally tasted the benefits.

At present, 60% of Costa Rica's gross national product (GDP) comes from foreign-related tertiary industries such as tourism and international finance, in which the scale of tourism itself has surpassed agriculture and become the most important economic pillar and national symbol of the country. Today, Costa Rica is recognized as a model of eco-tourism, which is characterized by the environmental protection NGO training local villagers as tour guides, leading tourists to the reserve to observe wildlife. This model is very successful and attracts a large number of tourists every year. This, in turn, has contributed to the country's environmental protection: Costa Rica's nature reserves account for 27% of the country's total land area, ranking first in the world.

We went to another coffee farm, called Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa Manor), where the processing plant was built just 2000 meters above sea level and is one of the only eco-certified estates in Costa Rica, so clean and beautiful that it is not like a farming place at all.
